Yo-yos and fun for 160 Soshanguve children
On Saturday 8 September, 160 children from Soshanguve were treated to a day of fun at Zita Park in the east of Pretoria. Although Toys for Africa were not directly involved with the planning of the day, we were asked to deliver a toy for each child. A lot of planning went in to the day, as a bus, food, drinks, t-shirts, medical kit, games and a lucky packet for each child, was organised.
Zita Park has acres of space, a swimming pool, jungle gyms for all shapes and sizes, but on Saturday there was a extra buzz. Laughter filled the air as children were queuing up to take turns on all the slides.
Toys for Africa were able to offer each child a yo-yo, thanks to a generous donation from Mr. Derek Muller who responded very quickly to a need being placed on forgood on Thursday evening, 6 September, very late.
After doing a lot of searching for a sponsor and neglecting our normal prayers for donations as we always do, we decided to put it in on forgood in a final effort to help these children that we met in 2011.
Luckily that worked, with prayers, and today the children all aged between 2 and 6, are playing with their new yo-yos. The yo-yos were specifically altered to have shorter strings, to fit in with the sizes of the children receiving them.
