The first heart transplant in the world was performed by Dr Chris Barnard at the Groote Schuur hospital on 3 December 1967. He was assisted by his brother, Marius Barnard. It is one of the most significant operations ever performed and has saved many lives. Globally, there are about 3500 heart transplants performed every year.
