Golden Hi Hills Mandela Day clean-up!
On a chilly winter's morning in Groenvield, the Golden Hi Hills team brought Madiba's legacy to life in the most beautiful way. Their CEO, Tsholo, shared with us how their Mandela Day initiative became more than just an event - it became a movement that united their entire community.
"This was exactly what we hoped for when we started planning this day" Tsholo told us, her voice full of pride. "The way everyone came together young and old, neighbours and strangers, it showed the true meaning of Ubuntu."
The day kicked off with incredible energy as volunteers arrived armed with gloves and refuse bags. Thanks to a connection made through our platform, they had 500 sandwiches to distribute a donation that made all the difference. "When those sandwiches arrived," Tsholo recalled, “you should have seen the volunteers' faces!”
With school holidays in full swing, children and teenagers joined in on the activities too and their enthusiasm and energy was infectious. Their local councillor rolled up his sleeves too, working side by side with residents. "Having the councillor participate meant so much to us," Tsholo shared. "It showed this wasn't just our project - it belonged to the whole community."
As the cleanup came to an end, something beautiful happened. Volunteers began distributing the leftover sandwiches not just with the homeless, but with elderly neighbours watching from their yards, with street vendors, and other community members in need. "That kindness is what made me know that we've created something special on this Mandela Day." Tsholo said.
The additional donation of cleaning equipment has set them up for future projects. "This is just the beginning," Tsholo promised. "Mandela Day showed us what's possible when a community comes together. Now we're planning on doing more cleanups in our community."
As we listened to this heartfelt feedback, one thing was clear: Golden Hi Hills didn't just honour Mandela's legacy for one day - they planted seeds of change that will keep growing and brought their community together for a wonderful common purpose.
