About this campaign
"There is a lot that happens around the world we cannot control. We cannot stop earthquakes, we cannot prevent droughts and we cannot prevent all conflict - but when we know where the hungry, the homeless and the sick exist, then we can help.”
- Jan Schakowsky
Welcome to the forgood WINTER WARM UP campaign where we highlight the plight of our fellow South Africans during the chilly months. On the left you’ll see a collection of ways where you can easily get involved and help out. Donate your previously loved stuff or volunteer. This isn’t just about the homeless. This is about finding some warmth - together.
DID YOU KNOW?
According to the Geneva-based nongovernmental organisation, the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions, 7.5 million South Africans lack access to adequate housing and secure tenure in South Africa. At least one-third of the population lives in poverty and while the official unemployment rate is given as around 20 percent, unofficial estimates put the number closer to 40 percent. Even those with homes remain vulnerable during the harsh winter. Millions live in small, poorly-ventilated, poorly-insulated wooden shacks built on informal settlements, the structures offering little protection from the cold.” Quote from an IRIN NEWS Report.
