The Urgent Need to Empower Women in South Africa's Gender Based Violence Crisis:
South Africa faces a critical and ongoing epidemic of gender based violence (GBV).  Shocking statistics reveal a culture of violence against women, with one in three women experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.  This fear and vulnerability significantly impacts women's lives, limiting their freedom, mobility, and overall well-being.

We need your help to raise these funds to teach violence prevention to women and children across South Africa.
* Knowledge is Power:  Many women lack awareness of their rights, available resources, and most importantly, effective safety strategies.  Workshops can equip women with the knowledge and skills to identify potentially dangerous situations, develop escape plans, and access support services.
* Building Confidence:  Violence Prevention, taught through building Safety Awareness and Self Defense life skills, fosters a sense of self-reliance and empowerment. By learning basic defense techniques, women gain the confidence to stand up for themselves and potentially deter violence.

Facing the icy waters of Cape Town in April’24 for their 1st Robben Island crossing is a remarkable effort by Werner van Geer, Jacques Kannemeyer and Andre Kannemeyer from Quicksilver Swimming Club Durbanville. Big Bay Events will be assisting these men to safely cross from Robben Island to Blaauwberg Strand in an effort to raise much needed awareness for Matla A Bana – A voice against child abuse!

It is heartening to see these fathers, who are not only avid swimmers and underwater hockey players but also caring parents, by using their skills to give a voice to deeply traumatized children. Their commitment to raising awareness for those children who are deeply affected by trauma reflects a commendable dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable children.

Matla A Bana’s work in addressing sexual child abuse is crucial and impactful. Their initiatives, such as implementing Child Friendly Reporting Facilities and providing training for specialized detectives of the SA Police Service, contribute significantly to the support and protection of child victims. The provision of Comfort Packs for those children reporting crimes demonstrates a compassionate approach to help these children through a challenging reporting process. Their effort to reach over 30 000 child victims annually highlight the substantial impact they are making in South Africa. 

The swimmer’s goal to reach R30 000 is commendable. Achieving this target would indeed make a direct and meaningful impact on the lives of approximately 100 children reporting sexual abuse withing the Western Cape over a two-month period. It showcases the tangible difference that community support and fundraising efforts can have in providing essential resources and assistance to these child victims. 

The focus on Comfort Packs is crucial, recognising the practical needs and emotional support required during the challenging reporting process for child victims of sexual crimes. Providing high-quality items is important as the reporting process can take up to 12 hours. All items are carefully selected to provide nutrition, comfort (teddy bear), occupy the child (coloring books and crayons) , toiletries to restore some dignity after the medical examination and new underwear after evidence collection. Also included is a Survival Guide that is used by the social forensic worker to assist the child on the road to recovery and dealing with the trauma. These packs supports both the physical and emotional wellbeing of these children when they go through a very traumatic time.

These rights, enshrined in our Constitution, were hard-fought by many heroic South Africans. At the African Eye Institute (AEI), we honour their contribution by bringing eye health services to South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens - children and the elderly.

Why not join us in positively impacting the lives of children and the elderly this Human Rights Day? 

Currently, there are barriers to accessing eye care services, particularly in poorer communities. Among these are transport, treatment costs, fear, and a lack of information and available services. 

To address this, the AEI brings eye health services to children in schools, and to the elderly at residential facilities, care homes, and halls within these communities. 

Through vision screening, referrals, and the provision of free spectacles, we’re protecting the right to healthcare access for all.

I will tell you what comes up for me, despair, disappointment, grief for the potential that could have been, why? Because as I drive past the Primary School I attended more than 30 years ago, it looks very much like how it has always been, and I think you can imagine what that looks like if I tell you the area I grew up in. Its not a township, it’s a rural area in Limpopo, a place called Segopje, Ga Mamabolo.
Comrade marathon winners were born there, world renowned surgeons, scholars and political leaders were born and raised in this area, which tells you that there I is no lack of potential there. The villages there are inherently strong communities and rooted in botho and looking out for one another. The communities there can do with more resources. 
Help us partner with these communities to build a different future for the children growing up there now. Your ideas on how we can spend your money are very much appreciated and welcome. 
Our plan? We would like to build little libraries in these communities, with Reading festivals each year to keep reinvigorating the love for reading and writing own stories.

We are passionate about helping mothers and babies in need in South Africa, with the ultimate aim of placing value and dignity on mothers during one of the most vulnerable times of her life.

One School at a Time 
AEI invites you to partner with us in providing spectacles to South African schoolgirls in need. Through our One School at a Time (OSaaT) programme, we are tackling vision impairment at public schools. This gives girls a better chance of educational success. 

Did you know? Around 339.4 million children worldwide are affected by short-sightedness. This is a vision impairment which can often be corrected with the donation of spectacles. 

Unfortunately, many of our impoverished families do not address vision impairment in children because of little or no access to eye health services and interventions such as spectacles. Often putting food on the table has to be prioritised over healthcare. 

You can help! A small donation can mean a pair of spectacles for a South African schoolgirl and a real chance of future success. 

Elderly Vision Screening
AEI invites you to partner with us in bringing vision screening and spectacles to South Africa’s senior citizens. Our Elderly Vision Screening programme brings eye health services directly to elderly women in retirement facilities, care homes, and community centres. By addressing vision impairment, we’re providing women with independence, safety, and happiness. 

Did you know? By age 65, one in every three individuals has a form of vision-reducing eye disease which more than doubles the risk of falls. Avoidable blindness is common among the elderly, yet early intervention and treatment can prevent this. 

Vision problems among the elderly include refractive errors that cause near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, poor depth perception, loss of peripheral vision, slower adjustment to lighting changes, and diabetic retinopathy. 

Unfortunately, there are barriers to accessing eye care services, particularly in poorer communities, leaving these elderly even more vulnerable. Transport challenges, treatment costs, fear, and a lack of information and available services prevent healthcare. 

South Africa’s gogos are the heart of many communities, caring for children, grandchildren, and neighbours. We should be doing everything we can to help them in this caregiving role.

South Africa the cancer crisis has become insurmountable as access to treatment and care is disproportionately associated with socio-economic status, access to health insurance, and geographic location. Treatment is unaffordable for the majority of South Africans, there are long waiting lists, inadequate human resources, and weak infrastructure. The Johnson-Rose Cancer Foundation (JRCF) was launched in 2023 as a direct response to the cancer crisis facing South Africa
The Foundation is run by a small group of volunteers with little time to spare.

GirlCode has laid out a number of broad objectives for implementing digital literacy education at the 
individual school level, to be articulated and executed in a period of five years. The GirlCoder club 
program aims to train +100 000 girls and teachers from underprivileged schools in digital literacy and 
programming languages. The developmental objective of the GirlCoder clubs is to improve the quality 
of education in schools for both teachers and students by integrating digital literacy in order to make all 
students and teachers digitally literate.
As basic computer literacy skills and coding increases in demand, initiatives that are focused on providing 
those skills have become a necessity especially if introduced within the schooling system. A number of 
online systems as well as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been introduced in recent years, 
and millions of people all over the world learn programming with these systems every day.

We recently encountered a situation where members of the public reported a dog in desperate need of medical care. Couldn't find him but as luck would have it we did after 2 weeks. Emaciated and in a very very bad condition, skin infected, inflamed and bleeding.😭

We had to do what's in the best interests of this poor boy 😭he crossed the rainbow bridge. The illness called mange is treatable, a long road to recovery, medication etc. But it's been to late for him 😢

We have a vet bill to settle (rescue and welfare rates) to be able to care for more like him.

One of our preschools has a problem with the drainage system in their street. In heavy rains the stormwater drains clog, and the water runs into their property - causing heavy flooding around the school. Sometimes the water is so high that they cannot use the classrooms at all, and it damages their materials as well.

Matla A Bana assist child victims who report crimes committed against them with Comfort Pack. In these pack we have carefully selected items to help the child during and after the processing time. Processing of a child victim can take between 4 - 12 Hours and all of the items in the Comfort Packs are used during or after the medical examination of the sexually abused child. It restores some dignity and provide much needed toiletries and nutrition in this very traumatic time.

Help us in our effort to raise good men to build a great nation, and leave a legacy free of abuse for our future women. 

We are looking for sponsorships to drive ongoing programmes teaching high school boys the principles of Positive Masculinity and equipping them with the tools to becomes activists against gender-based violence. 

How does it work?

Father A Nation mentors run two-hour training workshops with the boys at selected high-schools in and around Gauteng. These sessions, inevitably, result in animated conversations and debates, a great way to create awareness and promote learning of what it means “to be a man” and to commit to living with healthy masculinity and to eliminating gender-based violence. We teach that true men use their strength only for good, they love serve, honour and protect. We end the session with the students taking the “Champion Man” pledge, promising to stand against any form of abuse and to live with the 6 Virtues of Positive Masculinity.
