Avril Elizabeth Home for the Mentally Handicapped

Avril Elizabeth Home currently provides residential care to 154 intellectually challenged children and adults between the ages of 8 and 80 years, many with physical disabilities. The services provided include medical care, stimulation and a range of therapies. The Nurses work shifts on a rotation basis to ensure that the medical needs of the residents are taken care of 24/7. The Caregivers also work shifts on a rotation basis and assist with the 'activities of daily living', such as feeding and bathing. Physiotherapy is provided on a daily basis to ease, and where possible, to prevent contractures of the limbs. The Physiotherapist works closely with a Seating Specialist to ensure that immobile residents are seated and lifted correctly. The Physiotherapist also has exercise programs for residents who are able to participate.
