OUR INTERVENTION HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE!
Many children who were illiterate in English & Maths have since improved.
Up until covid19 (April 2020), the founders of the Find Your Life Program, Mr and Mrs Fred and Zandile Mwenda were Pastors who found themselves confronted with the serious negative impact that the Covid19 pandemic has had on school children and the youth. As schools opened after the lockdowns, children from neighbours in Mabopane were asking for help with homeworks and learning difficulties as some were struggling to catch up with the vast amounts of work they had to do. Soon we realized that there are even bigger problems affecting the children and the community at large, that existed even before the pandemic. The major problems that make this project an absolute need is that many of the schools teach all subjects in Tswana, which unfortunately leaves the children illiterate in english, which in turn affects all other subjects, especially maths. In many cases the parents are unable to help the children with homework for various reasons. Hence, the number of children has kept increasing to where we now have more than 25 children coming regularly, and cannot take more because our small house (4 rooms) is now stretched beyond capacity. We are pleased to hear many of our children attesting that since our intervention, they have improved in areas that were difficult for them before they came to us. Many of them came to us with no knowledge of English whatsoever. Almost all of them were having serious struggles with Maths, which we realised was particularly affected by illiteracy in english. We’ve had the pleasure of seeing a lot of them improving in these areas. Many who couldn’t understand, write nor read English are now doing so. The struggles with maths have reduced for many of them. We unfortunately cannot put a video here with some of their testimonies. One thing is for certain, there’s a great need for this service, more so when you consider that the township has 38 schools and about 70% of them are teaching in Tswana. Meaning that the few children we’ve been helping are just a tiny fraction of the huge numbers of children with this illiteracy problem. This intervention therefore is timely and much, much needed. We would like to do much more in 2022 - get a bigger venue, get professional Tutors, and operate as a professional Tutoring School so that we can partner as a supplementary service to many of the schools.
