From Survival to Confidence
Mbalenhle Mwale, founder of Smart Little Brains, shares how mentorship helped her move from carrying the weight of entrepreneurship alone to leading with confidence and clarity. Through the guidance of her mentor, Kershnee Chetty, she gained practical business skills, improved her financial management, and learned the importance of trusting the process and accepting support. Her journey highlights how mentorship can transform both personal growth and leadership.
Mbalenhle Mwale, founder of Smart Little Brains, joined mentorship not because she had everything figured out, but because she recognised that she needed support. As the head tutor of her afterschool programme, she carried many responsibilities on her own and often felt the pressure of always having to appear strong, even when uncertain about the next step. Through mentorship, Mbalenhle found a safe space to be vulnerable, ask questions, and accept guidance. One of the biggest lessons she learned was the importance of trusting the process, trusting others, and allowing herself to grow through support and collaboration. Mentorship also helped her strengthen her business skills, especially in financial management. She learned how to better track finances, manage bookkeeping, and introduce more structure into her work. These practical lessons gave her greater confidence in running and growing her business. With the support of her mentor, Kershnee Chetty, Mbalenhle also experienced significant personal growth. She learned to stop second-guessing herself, lead with confidence, and believe in the work she is building. Today, she is not only growing her business but also creating opportunities for others in her community. Her story reflects how mentorship can transform the way people lead, grow, and believe in their potential.
