Leading by Example
A mentor in the What About The Boys programme reflects on growing up without positive male role models and how mentorship gave him the opportunity to become the guidance he once needed. Through the National Mentorship Movement, he learned that mentorship is not only about giving advice but about leading by example, building confidence, and creating lasting impact in the lives of young boys. His story highlights the importance of mentorship in restoring hope, purpose, and direction, one young man
Growing up in the township, he did not have many positive male role models who demonstrated leadership, discipline, and accountability. Like many young boys, he often felt that guidance and support were missing during important stages of life. When he heard about the What About The Boys programme through the National Mentorship Movement, he immediately connected with its purpose. The programme gave him an opportunity to become the kind of mentor and role model he wished he had while growing up. Through mentoring young boys, he realised that mentorship is not only about giving advice, but also about leading by example. One question from a mentee deeply impacted him: “Why do adults say one thing and live another?” That moment reminded him of the responsibility mentors carry and the importance of living with integrity and consistency. Working with the boys strengthened his confidence and reminded him that he belongs in spaces where he can create positive change. Seeing the growth in the boys, their confidence, values, and academic achievements, confirmed the importance of the work being done through the programme. For him, mentorship is about planting seeds that will continue to grow beyond the present moment. He believes that if even one young boy grows up to positively impact his community, then the mentorship journey has already made a meaningful difference. His story reflects the power of mentorship in restoring hope, purpose, confidence, and direction in the lives of young people and mentors alike.
