Patient Layton

Layton, a young boy from the Northern Cape, was critically ill with end-stage renal disease after lifesaving surgery to remove both kidneys.

Too fragile for his urgently needed kidney transplant, he and his parents spent almost five months away from home while he recovered. Throughout this difficult period, Paedspal provided holistic support alongside the hospital team, helping manage Layton’s severe pain and counselling his parents through the transplant journey and its uncertainties. The psychosocial team also provided creative art therapy for Layton and aromatherapy support for his mother, offering comfort during a prolonged and challenging hospital stay. After months of care and uncertainty, Layton became strong enough to undergo his transplant and was discharged just before Christmas. With Paedspal’s support throughout his journey, Layton and his parents were finally able to return home to the Northern Cape together, with renewed hope for the future.
