story main

Patient: LM LM, a young girl living with severe cerebral palsy, developmental delay, seizures and significant feeding difficulties, was referred to Paedspal following aspiration pneumonia.

After two years without any medical follow-up, reconnecting LM and her mother with care required more than medical intervention — it required trust. Initially anxious and wary of the healthcare system, LM’s mother was met with a non-judgemental, supportive approach. Paedspal helped manage LM’s symptoms, provided counselling and practical support, and helped her mother understand and feel comfortable consenting to a feeding tube. The family also received social support, access to a mothers’ support group and a specialised buggy for LM. By creating a safe space for her mother to share the challenges of caring for LM at home, the team was able to connect the family with additional social support and explore longer-term care options. LM’s story demonstrates that paediatric palliative care goes beyond symptom management — it is about building trust, supporting families and ensuring children receive compassionate, appropriate and meaningful care.
