The South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) is a non-governmental organisation that exists to alleviate poverty and human suffering through implementation of diverse programs. Climate Change and Disaster Management is among the 7 core programs which SARCS implement across all the 9 provinces of South Africa which include Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, KwaZulu Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape, North-West and Free State. SARCS utilise the Community Engagement and Accountability approach to which is more participatory to ensure community members take the lead in initiatives and interventions concerning their communities from designing, planning, implementation, monitoring and accountability. Capacity building through education, training and skills development to local structures and Community Based Preparedness and Response (CBPR) teams in First Aid, Search and Rescue, Basic Disaster Management and Climate Action remain critical to SARCS' work.
