The Centre feeds out an average of 400 day old chicks to our resident birds and patients each day. Our closest reputable supplier is in Gauteng. We make a monthly trip to collect 12000 chicks to last us a month. We leave Dullstroom at 5am to be at the supplier by opening time. This means we have the least length of wait for the gassed chicks. They are loaded onto our bakkie with a canopy and ice and we drive straight back to Dullstroom arriving around lunchtime. The chicks are then spread out to cool with fans and are then packed into chest deep freezers for the freezing. In the summer months, this is not enough to chill the food quickly enough and we end up having wastage as well as run the risk of compromising the food. A refrigerated trailer will ensure the chicks are cooled from site and for the duration of the 3hour trip back and can then be directly packed into the freezers. We cannot compromise the health of our birds and as an NPO we cannot waste food. We do not however have the capacity to purchase this much need piece of machinery.
