Tips on donating your pre-loved goods

Whether it’s spring cleaning, moving house, or just decluttering your modern lifestyle, we all have items that can make a big difference when donated to the right Cause at the right time and in the right way. Here are six tips to help you let your previously loved stuff free—and help others while you’re at it on forgood!

1. Donate Tactically
Not every homeless shelter needs blankets, and not every early childhood development (ECD) center needs clothes. The Forgood website lists specific requirements from Causes across South Africa. Match your resources to the right need to create maximum impact.

2. Communication is Key
Talk to the nonprofit about what and how much you’re donating. Let them decide when and to whom the donations go—they’re the experts, after all!

3. Deliver the Goods if You Can
Donating is easy, but distributing the goods can be challenging due to the cost of sorting, packing, and picking up. If possible, drop off your donations at the Cause’s HQ. This small effort on your part can make a big difference by reducing their costs and increasing the impact.

4. Quality Over Quantity
Donate items in good condition. Focus on the "love" in previously loved stuff—no mismatched socks, unwashed clothes, ripped linen, or broken toys. Package your donations well and label everything clearly. If you wouldn’t want to receive it as a gift, neither will the beneficiaries.

5. Be Tax Efficient
To get a tax deduction, provide the fair estimated second-hand value of the items you donate. Check if the Cause has an 18A Tax Exemption status, so they can give you a Tax Donation Receipt. Note that new 18A regulations require you to share some personal details with the Cause.

6. Don’t Over-Promise and Under-Deliver
Be clear about your capabilities and follow through with your commitments. Causes value consistency as it helps them plan and make a difference in their communities.
