One of this month’s Top Causes is FORA (Friends of Rescued Animals). We’re recognising them not only for the dedication that they put into their profile on forgood, but for the work that they do in the communities they're present in. We interviewed them to learn a little more about who they are to share with, and inspire you!
Who are you and what do you do?
FORA is an animal shelter that cares for at least 500 unwanted animals at any given time. We see that they are vaccinated, dewormed, parasite control, sterilized, medical needs attended to. We go out on rescues and are situated in Krugersdorp. We adhere to a pro quality of life policy and operate on the three ‘R’s’ principle – Rescue, Rehabilitate and Re-home.
Why did you get started?
An ex-SPCA employee, Marlene De Beer, started FORA 2003 because it broke her heart to see so many animals being euthanised, so she began taking them home. A couple of years later, Marlene unfortunately passed away due to cancer, leaving the running of FORA to Linda and her incredibly capable team! They do an exceptional job looking after and caring for all these animals that don’t have anyone else or anywhere else to go! FORA has a Pro-life policy – animals are only euthanised if they are in distress due to age or illness.
What is a story that keeps you going?
There are loads of things that keep us going, and so many stories that we can’t just think of one, but seeing an animal get adopted and re-homed into a loving home makes our hearts really happy. We have a Facebook group where we post all the happy homing’s on, as well as all the stories that go on at the shelter and we encourage you to join us: https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsofrescuedanimals/
