We are seeing increased levels of anxiety, depression, grief and suicidal thoughts in school-going children and their teachers. Many of these young people are living in survival mode - a state of fight, flight or freeze. If this trauma is not addressed, there is a risk of these individuals becoming trapped in a downward spiral. Most mental health issues develop before the age of 18. The good news is that learners and teachers who are offered a safe space to talk, and safe person to confide in, are able to escape the trauma cycle and to thrive. At Community Keepers, we work with schools (89 across the country) to build a culture of well being. We open rooms on the school premises and offer free counselling as well as anchoring life-skill workshops where learners can discuss issues that are important to them.
