On the 31st of July 2026, history was made in Rustenburg as Grade 8 learners walked onto a stage not just as pupils, but as published authors. Their poems, written on the 31st July 2025, are now bound in a poetry anthology titled Mandela In Young Voices. The launch was more than a celebration. It was the beginning of Project R2Million — a 5-year promise by Book World, powered by Standard Bank, to put books in hands, mentorship in lives, and money in futures. With the venue filled with parents, teachers, principals, and partners, it was an afternoon of poetry, purpose, and possibility. 4 Poetry Toppers ascended the stage and recited their poems. Some were shy. Some were loud. All of them were proud. For many, it was the first time seeing their name in print. Project R2Million is a 5-year nationwide literacy and empowerment initiative that seeks to promote literacy lifestyle, build communities and empower learners through Book Donation Drive, Mentorship Programme, and an Education Fund. This project came about as a response to sustainable impact from the Literacy Lifestyle Project (June 2025-July 2026) beyond its end. It is a strategic exit plan that will keep the impact going, through three pillars. Pillar 1: VTSD Book Donation Drive Goal: 22,222 books on the hands of children by 2030 We will donate new age-appropriate books directly to the most vulnerable Grade 4-5 learners in underserved communities of the donor’s choice or to members of Book World’s Literacy Club Programme. Identified Villages, Towns & Small Dorpies (VTSDs) are Deelpan, Thekwane, Coligny, Derby, Delareyville, Koster, Haartebeesfontein, Moruleng, Magong, Wolmaranstaad, Ventersdop, and Zeerust. — libraries are few in these communities, and bookstores are 50km away. Essentially, book famine is prominent in these communities. Benefit: Every child gets a book to keep. Reading stops being something one does at school and becomes something you do at home, as a lifestyle. Pillar 2: Body of Knowledge Mentorship Programme Goal: Walk with 67 writers from Grade 8 to Grade 12 These 67 authors will get annual workshops in: 2026/2027 Financial Literacy with Standard Bank and Auditor General South Africa Volunteer employees and others 2027/2028 Career Development with DrLetMeTalkEdu and others 2028/2029 Leadership with Seriti Institute 2029/2030 Digital Skills with Book World & Astral Solutions 2030/2031 Amalgamated Support from various volunteer professionals offering psychological readiness, study options and plans etc. Benefit: They don’t just publish once. They grow for 5 years with skills, networks, and support. Pillar 3: Bokwadi Education Fund Goal: R2Million by 2031 Every Mandela In Young Voices copy sells for R150. R90 (60%) goes directly into an education fund named Project R2million administered by Standard Bank set by Book World. By 2031, each of the 67 writers will have R29,850.75 to use for tertiary education, possibly, for equipment, or business start-up. Benefit: Talent is converted into real funding. Poverty does not get to decide who goes to university. Sustainable Livelihoods is encouraged. Why This Matters Now The 67 learners leave Grade 12 not just with a Matric certificate, but with a book portfolio, life skills, and a funded education account. 22,222 Learners will have access to books in homes where there are none. Thekwane just opened its first community library in March 2026 with 2,500 books. Deelpan got its first school library in 2023. We are multiplying that impact. Parents see their children as authors. Teachers see reading as possible. Companies see CSI that creates measurable outcomes. Communities will grow and thrive. We are proving a model. If we can do this in 5 VTSDs, we can replicate it in 100. This is national impact. We are building literacy-rich communities, and are affording children opportunities to thrive academically, socially, and economically. 67 VOICES. 1 BOOK.
