Little Khomotso Matseba is an exceptionally bright six-year-old girl. We first noticed something might be affecting her hearing shortly after she turned five in 2024. She was referred to the PCIU in Pretoria, where tests confirmed a profound hearing loss in both ears. At Lesedi Day Care, a crèche supporting children of farmworkers, we help our learners with school readiness and placement at our local feeder primary school. However, in Khomotso’s case, we had to find a more specialised environment to meet her needs. After an extensive search, we identified Sonitus School for the Hearing Impaired in Pretoria, where Khomotso has since been enrolled. While the school itself does not charge tuition fees, she stays in the hostel from Mondays to Fridays, at a cost of R3,496.50 per month. We are therefore seeking assistance to cover her hostel fees, ensuring she can continue to learn and thrive in an environment designed to support her potential.
