Breaking the silos: why Causes (ngos) need each other more than they realise!

In the development sector, we often speak about “impact” as if it’s a destination we’re all racing toward alone. The truth? Causes are the heartbeat of creating change in this country. Yet too many of them look outside the sector for solutions to internal challenges, struggles with systems, skills shortages, sustainability when sometimes, the very answers we need are lying right next door, in the organization we quietly view as competition.

Let’s be honest. Causes are fighting for the same limited pool of funding, the same donor attention, and the same media spotlight. This scarcity mindset has created a culture of working in silos. We hoard knowledge. We hesitate to ask for help. We see another NGO’s success as our loss. But here’s the hard truth: that “competition” isn’t just exhausting, it can be a hindrance to real, meaningful partnerships. While we’re busy guarding our “turf”, the communities we serve continue to face the same social ills.

But what happens when we choose differently? What happens when a Cause looks at another and says, “I have skills you need, and you have access I need, let’s make impact together”?

That question is exactly what WeThinkCode has been answering for some of the Causes on our platform .

WeThinkCode trains young South Africans to become world-class software developers, equipping them with market-relevant programming skills and work-readiness competencies. They are, by definition, an NGO. But instead of staying in their lane, they’ve chosen to give back to the very sector they belong to, not with money, but with something arguably more valuable: digital skills.

What WeThinkCode Is giving back

WeThinkCode understands that many NGOs struggle with the same digital gaps outdated websites, no in-house technical support, limited capacity to teach digital literacy to their own beneficiaries. So they decided to do something about it.

They have offered NGOs a chance to access their digital inclusion and work readiness programmes at no cost. This means trained facilitators, a complete curriculum, and real outcomes for the young people NGOs already serve. But beyond that, they have quietly stepped in to help some organisations on our platform with website development, maintenance, and hosting all pro bono.

Why? Because WeThinkCode believes that digital skills are not a luxury. They are a bridge. A bridge to employment, to dignity, and to stronger organisations.

Why WeThinkCode’s contribution matters

WeThinkCode is living proof that NGOs don’t have to be islands. They are showing us what “giving back to the sector” actually looks like: not through grand gestures, but through sharing the specific, practical skills they already possess. They aren’t seeing other NGOs as rivals for resources. They’re seeing them as teammates in solving South Africa’s most pressing problems.

Imagine what could happen if more NGOs followed their example. What if the organisation with financial literacy skills offered free workshops to smaller peers? What if the one with monitoring and evaluation expertise shared templates instead of guarding them? What if we all stopped asking “What can I get?” and started asking “What do I have to give?”

Our challenge to the sector

So here is my challenge to every NGO leader, programme manager, and volunteer reading this:

Stop looking only outside for solutions. Start looking beside you.

What does your NGO have that another lacks? Boardroom space? Legal advice? Communications support? Digital skills like WeThinkCode

And what do you need that someone else might be able to offer for free or in exchange for something equally small?

We are all on the same team. The problems we fight poverty, inequality, lack of access to education or healthcare don’t care about our logos or funding sources. They only care if we show up together.
