#TopCause: Supapele NPC

Our latest #TopCause is Supapele NPC. We’re recognising them not only for the dedication that they put into their profile on forgood, but for the work that they do in the communities they are present in. We interviewed them to learn a little more about who they are to share with, and inspire you.

Who are you and what do you do?

In short, we are a group of what we would call, philanthropist mercenaries, and as our name suggests we believe in helping others to #MoveForward📷 Our aim? To assist other charities to reach their goals by getting our team and supporters to either contribute financially or donate their time and skills.

Why did you get started?

Our concept was born when a group of friends wanted to help make a difference, but couldn’t decide where to start. We tried our hand at a couple of projects and finally thought, why just pick ONE? This idea seemed to work well with our supporters who could then also pick and choose which projects they felt closest to and how they wanted to contribute. How does it work? Every couple of months, we meet and decide how we will spend our time and resources for the next quarter. The options include working with the homeless, focusing on children and education, assisting disadvantaged females, spending time at animal shelters… Basically, trying to find any charities that we feel passionate about and that our supporters will enjoy working with!

What is a story that keeps you going?

For #YouthDay, Supapele NPC partnered with Dlala Nje and Hooked on Books South Africa to help reward the #DlalaNje champs! Each quarter, 30 children who outdid themselves by serving their community, friends, family and schools are selected to hoist the prestigious "Dlala Nje Champ" title! The AMA-ZING show (by the HookedOnBooks cast) was open to all the children and after, each Champ was called up on stage and given one of the cool young adult books (from the show) and a cupcake! One of our member's, Robert Rumney gives us his take on the events of the day: "As the team from Hooked On Books took to the stage - the stage in question being one they had set up flash-mob style in the middle of Wanderers stadium, one could not help but be impressed by their ability to speak from the diaphragm, project their voices and command the attention of a large group of restless children, against all odds, in an environment with competing noise from every angle." Needless to say, they pulled it off perfectly. Multiple costume changes, stories and interesting theatrical devices were employed, supplemented by some great audience participation! At the end, when the books were distributed to the kids - It was refreshing to see them so invigorated about the prospect of reading a book, especially with the imagery from the performances fresh in their minds, reminding them how easy the power of imagination can bring the words and stories of a book to life. One could not help be a little jealous seeing the quality of these books and their contents. If I had read more myself, perhaps I would have realized that the crocodile in the one book I was obsessed with for so long, was, actually, in fact an alligator." At Supapele we STRONGLY believe that readers are leaders and each Youth Day we try host this event!
