Help The Jumpstart Foundation Trust raise R30,000 for Maths workbooks for disadvantaged learners
Here's a little more info about this opportunity...
Thandiwe (7) in Grade 2 has lost more than half of her learning time since lockdown began in March 2020. She is at risk of dropping out of school at an early age. She attends Buyani Primary School, a quintile 1 school in Finetown, Johannesburg, an area characterised by high unemployment and low levels of education. Learning losses are especially problematic when it comes to maths education. Because children must master one concept before moving onto the next, interrupted learning results in them being unable to acquire the basics, and their engagement with maths is likely to become less and less over time. JumpStart can help Thandiwe and her peers to catch up on the maths curriculum by the time they enter Grade 4, a pivotal moment in their maths journeys. Our learners develop an early love of maths because: -Our learner centred NumberSense workbooks ensure that teaching and learning happens at the right level because children pace themselves so that they are not left behind when the class moves on to a new activity. Workbook levels can be adjusted to the needs of the learner. -We give teachers access to the best pedagogy so that they teach for understanding rather than for the sake of completing the curriculum. -We also train unemployed youth to work as maths tutors so that children receive the individual attention they need to excel in maths. -And we track progress using a tap app so that learning gaps are remediated in real time and high performing learners remain continuously motivated. Independent evaluations by the University of Johannesburg show that our model significantly improves numeracy outcomes in as little as 18 months, and the programme adds the equivalent of an extra year of instruction over the Grade 1-3 foundation phase. This suggests that JumpStart is an affordable and relevant response to COVID-19 learning losses for children who are just starting their maths journeys. Help us fund 200 NumberSense workbooks for Buyani, at a cost of R150 per workbook. Buyani parents self-fund the programme for 833 Grade 1-3 learners; however job losses and pressures on household budgets are putting the programme at risk. Your contribution will help to ensure Buyani’s continued participation in the 2022 school year and that poor learners are not left behind.
