Stellenbosch University, in partnership with the Matie Community Service (MGD) is changing lives through their Engaged Citizenship Campaign.

The Engaged Citizenship project is all about providing an opportunity for students to engage in real-world challenges, acquire critical skills within their field of study and prepare for the workplace with practise-driven experience – while achieving social impact!

Wonder Zuko Sityata, a second year Social Work student got involved with this program by tutoring Mathematics to a Grade 9 learner from Sizanani Mentorship Programme.

Here is his story…

"Through the Department of Social Work, MGD has introduced us to an opportunity to get involved by volunteering as virtual tutors. We were all on board to see how this would play out in a virtual space!

I chose to tutor in Mathematics - which is one of the most challenging subjects from primary level to high school level. I am someone who continually strives to better my understanding in both my personal and professional life. Because of that, I have highly developed skills in problem identification and implementation of effective solutions. This made me confident that I would be able to help at least one struggling learner.

"If you'd like to help a Cause - make sure you look at the Cause's profile on www.forgood.co.za and take it from there!"

I have committed to virtual tutoring for a few months so I am still working with Sizanani Mentorship Programme. So far it's going really well! I believe the engagement I have with the learner creates ways for the Cause to make a difference in the learner’s life. I'm looking forward to the end result of my volunteering - which will be seeing the learner achieve higher grades and have the self-confidence to shine at school!"
