Quote This Woman+ (QW+) is a South African non-profit challenging gender bias and lack of diversity in mainstream media narratives. A report before the African Union states: women comprise just 1 in 5 voices quoted in cross-continental media. Locally and abroad, media organizations reinforce dominant narratives shaped by: urban, high income, and often white, men. QW+ disrupts this by curating women+ experts into a database as a resource for journalists and newsrooms to diversify their sources and subjects. The “+” in QW+ means we include voices who are marginalized due to gender, sexuality, race, class, geography, disability, or other factors. We give these women+ experts resources, training and support to participate in media interviews and build their public profile. QW+ works with 1000+ journalists to ensure they get diverse expert sources, including via a fortnightly newsletter. Our database includes topic-focused labels which reinforce a balanced telling of African issues. We've recently been awarded a grant by the Google News Initiative, which we are thrilled about. However, they're not paying for everything, and we still need to cover some staff costs.
