Aurora's vision and mission

Aurora PSO is a place to make friends and build relationships; and ultimately strives to become a home away from home for its members. Our vision is to provide fun and engaging experiences beyond the purely academic and to celebrate the differences and varied perspectives and experiences of our members. Furthermore, we hope to provide opportunities for our members to pursue their hobbies and passions through our various portfolios such as culture, sports, and social impact. We also aim to provide leadership and critical engagement opportunities to encourage members to push their boundaries and grow as individuals, and to participate in the relevant and topical conversations that affect our students on campus.

What are we currently doing?

Self-Defence Class: This project will give our members the opportunity to socialise and interact with each other, whilst also getting some exercise and learning a valuable skill set that will empower them to protect themselves. It will also open our members’ minds to realise and think about the realities that women and other marginalised groups face in our country. GBV is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, contemporary social issues that we as a society in South Africa face. We as Aurora would like to offer basic self-defense classes to members of our community to empower them to empower themselves. These sessions will be lessons on how to defend yourself against a threat or an attack, offered by an MMA fighter who has training in self-defense. There will be 22 sessions, with 6 short ones taking place in a welcoming, to familiarise our newcomers with our social impact projects, as well as to gently educate them about the realities we face on campus with these types of issues. The other 16 sessions will take place throughout the year on a termly basis.
