Oude Molen's vision & mission:

Oude Molen strives to enhance the holistic development by all its members, by providing the opportunity for growth and development through a variety of opportunities outside the classroom such as leadership, sports and cultural activities. Oude Molen provides the perfect platform for each individual to flourish during the university career and really make their experience here one that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

What are we currently doing?

Kayamandi Primary Fun Day: e will be spending the day at Kayamandi Primary School with soccer and netball mini-tournaments running throughout the day whilst a face painting area operates concurrently. We will likely be partnering with Monica as well as Harmonie in an effort to ensure the event runs efficiently and involves as much of the cluster as possible. (will reach out to other cluster members). In addition to that, we will be donating fictional books as well as educational content to contribute to their newly built library. The learners will be fed snacks throughout the day as many of them go to school and leave every day, hungry.

Prochurus Creche: We will be spending an afternoon at a creche below the Jonkershoek mountains, approximately 15 minutes away from campus, where we will spend the time reading them stories, playing soccer as well as netball (items purchased in above-mentioned event) and in an effort to link with the sustainability portfolio- we will be educating them on the importance of recycling and teaching them about Ecobricks. We will be face painting while educating them on environmental issues in an attempt to keep their attention. *We will be bringing Monica onto this campaign as they are very passionate about eco-bricks.

Engineering Grass Movie Night: We will be projecting a movie onto a very large DIY background and charge students from all of campus R20 pp to bring picnic blankets and watch the movie. We already own a projector and sound system which will mean that there are very few costs involved and the proceeds will all be going to the Stellenbosch Woman’s safe House to provide assistance to victims of domestic abuse. The event will be promoted as a chance for students to enjoy a fun night with friends while still benefitting struggling members of the greater Stellenbosch area. We estimate approximately 100 people would be able to comfortably attend the event. In addition to all of the above mentioned, we will also have a designated area where people may drop off any donations they want that will be handed over along with the proceeds (donations could include absolutely anything such as female sanitary products, blankets, clothes etc.).

Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch: The event will take place in the 1^st semester and we aim to spend some time with the animals as well as leave donations that will make a lasting impact after we have left. The event will also build a stronger bond between Oude Molen and the rest of the Victoria cluster. We will be hiring transport for our members as well as another PSO or residence within the Victoria cluster which will minimize costs as well as improve cluster relations.

Kaya’mmunity Gardens: There are schools in Kayamandi that have community gardens, but they are not flourishing at the level I would like to see. We will firstly be visiting the schools that have community gardens that aren’t reaching their full potential and we’ll help restore them and then have an open conversation with the people responsible for its upkeep about the best possible ways to take care of it, I will arrange with a Botany lecturer to come with us due to the fact that it's likely not anyone’s fault, but rather natural factors such as soil issues and drainage problems.

What else can you do?

Community service has been an integral part of Stellenbosch University (SUN) for decades albeit in different forms and with shifting emphasis.
